Privacy notice

What we do with your personal data when you visit this website or get in touch with us, and the rights you have over it.

Who we are

We are Cheerful Monster Limited, registered in England and Wales, company number 12604293. Our registered office is 86–90 Paul Street, 3rd Floor, London EC2A 4NE.

We decide how your personal data is used, which makes us its “controller”. Our Chief Operating Officer is our Data Protection Lead.

For anything about your data, give us a shout at roar@cheerfulmonster.com.

What we collect and why

When you fill in one of our forms, we collect what you type in:

  • your name and email address
  • your message
  • on the Bonfire forms, also your company, the kind of engagement you want, your career stage, or a link you choose to share Deprecated

We also record which part of the site you came from, so we know what you are asking about. We use all of this to reply to you and, if you are asking about working with us, to discuss that.

When you email us directly, we collect your email address and whatever you choose to tell us, and use it to reply.

When you visit the site, our host processes your IP address and basic details of each request, such as the page asked for and your browser type. This is needed to deliver the site and protect it from attack.

We do not use cookies, or anything similar that stores information on your device. We do not track you across other websites, and we do not use your data for advertising.

Our legal reasons

Data protection law only lets us use your data where we have a legal reason (a “lawful basis”). Ours are:

  • Bonfire forms (for organisations and for builders): taking the steps you ask for before we enter a contract with you. Deprecated
  • Our main contact form, and emails: our legitimate interest in replying to people who get in touch.
  • Visiting the site: our legitimate interest in running a website that works and is secure.

You do not have to give us any data. If you leave out your email address, we cannot reply.

Who we share it with

We use a few providers to run the site and our email. Each acts only on our instructions.

  • Cloudflare hosts the site. It processes your IP address and basic request details to deliver and protect the site, and may produce anonymous visit statistics. It does not set cookies.
  • Formspree receives what you submit through our forms and forwards it to us.
  • Google Workspace provides our email, so your messages to us are stored there.

We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with anyone else unless the law requires us to.

Data outside the UK

Cloudflare, Formspree and Google may process your data in the United States. Where they do, it is protected by contractual safeguards recognised under UK data protection law.

How long we keep it

  • Enquiries: 12 months after we were last in touch, then deleted.
  • If you become a client: for as long as we work together, plus six years, because we may need the records if a dispute arises.
  • Visit data: Cloudflare keeps it for a short time under its own privacy policy.

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • get a copy of the data we hold about you
  • have it corrected if it is wrong
  • have it deleted
  • ask us to stop using it, or to limit how we use it
  • object to our using it where we rely on legitimate interests
  • have it moved to another organisation, where you gave it to us for a contract

To use any of these rights, email roar@cheerfulmonster.com. It is free, and we will reply within one month.

How to complain

If you are unhappy with how we have used your data, please tell us first at roar@cheerfulmonster.com. We will acknowledge your complaint within 30 days, look into it, and tell you the outcome.

You can also complain to the regulator, the Information Commission (formerly the ICO), at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.

Changes to this notice

We will update this page if what we do with your data changes. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
